Strega
Strega Grancaffe (700 ml)
฿1,009
When the Alberti family established their distillery beside the Benevento railway station in 1860, they encoded the formula for Strega into a locked herb cupboard — a legal trade secret passed parent-to-child, known to exactly two living people at any given time. That unbroken secrecy is not theatre; it is the structural reason the recipe has remained unchanged for over 160 years across six generations. The distillery sits at the foot of the Apennines, roughly 50 km northeast of Naples, where the River Sabato supplies the wild Samnite mint that anchors the botanical architecture — a menthol-forward, resinous character that separates Strega sharply from sweeter, vanilla-driven peers like Galliano. Approximately 70 herbs and spices — sourced from Europe, Central America, and the Orient — are macerated in grain alcohol, then distilled in traditional swan-neck alembic pot stills. Saffron from Abruzzo and sugar syrup are blended in post-distillation to fix the vivid gold colour and calibrate sweetness, before the spirit is matured in oak or ash vats for a minimum of several months and bottled at 40% ABV with no artificial colours or flavours. The special feature here is categorical: Strega is the only major Italian amaro whose exact recipe carries legal trade-secret protection — not a marketing claim, but a documented proprietary formula. The result is a simultaneously minty, piney, and warmly spiced liqueur with a lightly viscous body and a long, resinous finish that no peer replicates.
