Founded in 1894 in Pisticci, Basilicata, Amaro Lucano was created by pastry maker Pasquale Vena, who assembled a proprietary blend of botanicals drawn from the wild herbs of the Lucanian Apennines — a range that isolates this southern Italian region between Campania and Calabria and produces intensely aromatic scrubland flora. The recipe has remained within the Vena family for five generations, and the exact botanical count — commonly cited as around 30 ingredients — is still a closely guarded secret.

The production method centres on cold maceration of the botanical blend in neutral grain spirit, preserving volatile aromatic compounds that heat-based extraction would diminish. The resulting infusion is blended, sweetened to a medium-bittersweet register, and bottled at 28% ABV — lower than many northern Italian amari, which keeps the herbal profile approachable without sacrificing the gentian-and-wormwood bitterness that defines the category.

What distinguishes Lucano within the amaro landscape is its pronounced citrus-peel brightness — likely from Lucanian bergamot and bitter orange — cutting through the darker roasted-herb base in a way that sets it apart from the more resinous, alpine-style amari of the north. Drink neat over ice or long with soda as a digestivo.
