The name Frangelico traces to a 17th-century hermit monk, Fra Angelico, said to have cultivated wild hazelnuts in the hills around Canale d'Alba in Piedmont — a story the brand anchors in its distinctive friar-shaped bottle. That origin lore is not mere marketing: the Langhe and Monferrato hills of Piedmont remain among Europe's premier hazelnut-growing zones, where the Tonda Gentile delle Langhe cultivar produces nuts with exceptional oil density and aromatic complexity. Frangelico is produced by macerating toasted Piedmontese hazelnuts in neutral grain spirit, then blending the extract with distillates of cocoa, vanilla, and a proprietary selection of herbs and berries. The final liqueur is bottled at 20% ABV, a calibration that keeps the hazelnut oil-soluble aromatics in suspension without the spirit heat overwhelming them. What separates Frangelico from generic nut liqueurs is the layered botanical backbone — the herb-and-berry distillates prevent the profile from reading as one-dimensional praline. The liqueur is consistent across releases by design, making it a reliable benchmark for the toasted-hazelnut style it effectively created.
