When Marcos de Moraes founded Sagatiba in 2004 with the explicit mission of internationalising cachaça, workers at the Minas Gerais facility made a discovery that would define the brand's apex expression: a batch distilled in 1982, quietly resting in antique French Limousin oak ex-cognac barrels — vessels that had been aging the spirit for over two decades before the modern company even existed. That accident of time became Preciosa.

The sugarcane is sourced from fields immediately surrounding the Minas Gerais distillery, a state whose highland interior produces cane with less of the coastal humidity-driven grassiness typical of northeastern Brazilian expressions. Specific soil and elevation data are undisclosed by the producer, but the region's artisanal pot-still tradition is the production backbone here.

Preciosa is distilled in traditional copper pot stills in small artisan batches — the same method as the Velha line — preserving fruity congeners that multi-distillation would strip. The decisive differentiator is the Limousin oak aging regime, which imparts the fine-grained tannin structure and dried-fruit oxidative depth associated with aged Cognac rather than the vanilla-forward sweetness of American white oak. Bottled at 21 years of age, this is categorically unlike any other expression in the Sagatiba range.

The extended tropical aging in a warm-climate warehouse accelerates oak extraction relative to European cellars, compressing what would be 40+ years of maturation in Cognac into two decades of Brazilian heat. Drink now through the next several years; further bottle aging offers diminishing returns given the spirit's already advanced oak integration.
