Opus One in Bangkok: The Napa Icon, Its Price & What to Buy Instead

Opus One is the wine that made Napa Valley a fine-wine address. A 1979 joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild, it was conceived to prove California could produce a Bordeaux-blend at First Growth level. Four decades on, it is the most requested American wine in Bangkok — and the Opus One price in Bangkok is the first question every buyer asks. Here is the full picture, including the bottle most people don't know about.

The Wine That Bridged Two Worlds

The idea was radical in 1979: a Bordeaux baron putting his name on a California wine. Mouton Rothschild had only been elevated to First Growth six years earlier, and Baron Philippe risked that prestige on Oakville gravel. The estate sits on some of the best benchland in Napa, and the blend follows Bordeaux logic — Cabernet Sauvignon leading, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The result created a category. Without Opus One there is no cult Napa, no Dominus, no hundred-point California Cabernet market. It remains the reference point.

Opus One 2021 — The Current Release

James Suckling rated the 2021 vintage 99 points. In Bangkok it sells for around ฿21,000 — roughly half to a third of an equivalent-scoring First Growth Bordeaux, which is exactly the comparison the founders invited.

Red wine being poured at golden hour, two glasses catching the light Napa's calling card: ripeness and polish that show early, structure that still rewards a decade of patience.

The Second Wine Nobody Talks About

Like the great Bordeaux estates, Opus One makes a second label — Overture — from younger vines and lots that don't make the grand vin. Wine Advocate rates it 95 points, and at around ฿9,800 it is less than half the price of the flagship.

This is one of the best-kept open secrets in Bangkok fine wine: the same estate, the same winemaking team, most of the polish — at a price that turns a collector's trophy into a serious dinner bottle.

If You Like Opus One: Two Napa Neighbours

Dominus Estate is the other Bordeaux-royalty-in-Napa story — Christian Moueix of Pétrus farming the historic Napanook vineyard in Yountville. The 2016 earned perfect 100-point scores, and at around ฿21,000 it sits at exactly Opus One's level with a more savoury, Old-World profile.

Continuum is the Mondavi family's own sequel — founded by Tim Mondavi after the family sold the Robert Mondavi winery, farming Sage Mountain Vineyard high on Pritchard Hill. The estate blend scores 99 points and runs around ฿15,000. If the Opus One story appeals because of the Mondavi half, this is where that lineage actually continued.

Buying Opus One in Bangkok: Practical Notes

Vintage matters less than in Bordeaux. Napa's climate is far more consistent than the Médoc's, so the gap between a good and great Opus One year is narrower. The 99-point 2021 is not a lucky outlier; it is the house standard.

Provenance still matters more than anything. These wines travel from California through tropical heat. Buy from a merchant that can tell you how the bottle got here and where it has been sitting since. Once home, treat it like any fine wine in this climate — our Bangkok wine storage guide applies in full.

Decant it young. Current-release Opus One repays an hour in a decanter. Drink it too cold and too fast and you paid for structure you never met.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Opus One cost in Bangkok?

The current vintage (2021) sells for around ฿21,000 in Bangkok. The estate's second wine, Overture, is around ฿9,800 — the most accessible way into the estate's winemaking.

Where can I buy Opus One in Thailand?

WNLQ9 stocks both Opus One and Overture in Bangkok with temperature-controlled storage and local delivery. Fine-wine allocations are small; single vintages come and go.

What is the difference between Opus One and Overture?

Overture is Opus One's second label: same estate, same team, younger vines and declassified lots, blended across vintages. Critics rate it 95 points against the grand vin's 99 — a smaller gap than the 2× price difference suggests.

Is Opus One better than Bordeaux First Growths?

Different, not better. Opus One offers riper fruit and earlier drinkability; a First Growth like Château Margaux offers more aromatic complexity and longer aging arcs. At Bangkok prices, Opus One delivers a 99-point wine at roughly half the First Growth ticket.

Which wines are similar to Opus One in Bangkok?

Dominus Estate (Christian Moueix's Napa project, 100 points, ~฿21,000) and Continuum (the Mondavi family's Pritchard Hill estate, 99 points, ~฿15,000) are the two closest in both story and stature currently in stock.
