Jerry Lohr planted Arroyo Seco in 1972 — eleven years before the AVA existed — staking a claim on a stretch of Monterey County floor where the Arroyo Seco River deposited layers of alluvial cobbles and 'Greenfield potato' stones that force vine roots to compress within 1–5 feet of the surface. That shallow, heat-radiating gravel bed, swept daily by cold Monterey Bay fog and wind, is the physical engine behind Riverstone's name and its structure.


The 2022 is 100% Chardonnay from those estate blocks, night-harvested to preserve aromatic integrity, then pressed on-site and transferred directly to barrel — barrel-fermented rather than tank-fermented, a choice that builds textural integration from the first day of fermentation. Malolactic fermentation is employed for roundness, and the wine rests sur lie for approximately 9 months in oak, accumulating lees-derived creaminess without losing the site's inherent cool-climate tension.


The 2022 vintage marks the introduction of a screwcap closure — an unusual move for a barrel-fermented California Chardonnay at this tier, prioritising reductive freshness and closure consistency over cork tradition. The result is a wine where stony Arroyo Seco minerality and preserved acidity read clearly against the oak-derived texture, with the 2022 warm-season fruit weight providing immediate accessibility and a drinking window extending comfortably through 2027.
