From our sommelier team

A single-vineyard Chardonnay from Leeuwin Estate's home block in Margaret River, Western Australia. The style is intensely concentrated yet elegant, showing white peach, pear, citrus, jasmine, cashew and toasted hazelnut, with brioche and subtle struck-flint minerality in riper vintages; the palate is powerful but seamlessly balanced by taut acidity, with notable length and a strong track record for cellaring.

The 1981 vintage of this wine — only the estate's second-ever release — was singled out in an international Decanter blind tasting and hailed as among the best Chardonnays in the world, an achievement widely credited with putting the then-obscure Margaret River region on the global wine map; the Art Series Chardonnay has since remained a benchmark bottling, the only white wine included in Langton's top 'Heritage Five' classification tier as of 2018.

Producer history

Leeuwin Estate was founded in 1969 when Denis Horgan acquired the property (then a cattle farm) as part of a business deal, with vineyards planted from 1975 following early encouragement and mentorship from Napa Valley's Robert Mondavi, who saw potential in the Margaret River region. The estate's first commercial vintage was 1979, and the winery remains under the stewardship of the Horgan family, now spanning three generations.

Signature pairings

  • Grilled marron or lobster with herb butter — The wine's richness and citrus-driven acidity match the sweetness of grilled shellfish and cut through butter.
  • Roast chicken with lemon and herbs — The wine's stone fruit and citrus notes complement roast poultry, while its acidity balances the dish's richness.
  • Thai green curry with prawns (แกงเขียวหวานกุ้ง) — The Chardonnay's fruit-forward richness and creamy texture can stand up to coconut-based curry, with its acidity offsetting mild chile heat.

97 points in Wine Advocate - "The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom. The season was a challenging one in Margaret River, defined by the rainfall, which was constant. The temperatures were modest (not cool, as plenty of rain might suggest),and given that the region is so diverse in terms of distances between vineyard areas, this created quite a patchwork of outcomes for producers. On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory—it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. Sealed under screw cap."
