Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Bourgogne Aligote "Clos des Perrieres la Combe"

Thibault Liger-Belair is the first vigneron in nine generations of a family that operated exclusively as négociants — the same lineage that once held La Tâche Grand Cru before selling it to DRC in 1929. When he founded the domaine in 2001, he turned that trading heritage into a grower's obsession with individual parcels, including this single-site Aligoté from the Clos des Perrières la Combe, a named enclosure within the limestone-and-chaille (limestone-flint) soils of the Nuits-Saint-Georges terroir. The chaille subsoil — a dense mix of fractured limestone and flint — imparts a stony, saline tension to Aligoté that the grape rarely achieves in the Côte Chalonnaise benchmarks of the appellation.

Viticulture is fully biodynamic, with soils plowed by horse to preserve structure and microbial life. In the cellar, hand-harvested fruit undergoes triple sorting before native yeast fermentation in open-top vessels. Aging follows the domaine's standard protocol for village-level whites: older oak barrels, minimal intervention, no fining, no filtration, with sulfites sourced from a natural Polish mine rather than synthetic inputs.

What is categorically unusual here: Aligoté is almost never given single-clos treatment at this level of biodynamic rigour — this is Pinot Noir-grade site specificity applied to Burgundy's workhorse white variety. The warm 2020 vintage was navigated by Thibault with deliberate restraint to preserve freshness and energy rather than allow over-extraction, yielding a wine of taut mineral drive rather than weight.
