This is standard Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz from the 2023 vintage, presented in a limited-edition gift box designed by Troye Sivan; the box is packaging and does not alter the wine. The 2023 blend is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz, drawn from McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully in South Australia. Maturation is twelve months in American oak hogsheads, 33% of them new. Alcohol is 14.5%. Bin 389 was first made in 1960 by Max Schubert, out of his Grange trials, and combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. It is widely called Baby Grange because, as Penfolds puts it, components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. Penfolds describes the range as showing complex aromatics, palate richness and decades of cellaring capability. On the 2023, the house note reports dark fruit aromas, with the richness of blackberries and the juicy depth of plums, then red currant and tart cranberry on the palate, closing with fine tannins and savoury length.

Producer history

Bin 389 dates to 1960, when Max Schubert first made it, and it emerged from the Grange trials he ran in the mid-twentieth century. Penfolds credits the wine with helping build its reputation among red wine drinkers by combining Cabernet Sauvignon structure with Shiraz richness, and connects it to Schubert's stated ambition of creating a dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other. The Baby Grange nickname arose because parts of the blend mature in barrels that previously held the preceding Grange vintage. In March 2026 Penfolds announced a creative partnership with Troye Sivan, whom it describes as a visionary whose influence spans music, fashion and design, launched at an intimate dinner during Paris Fashion Week and covering a limited-edition 750ml gift box and a 1.5-litre magnum of the 2023 Bin 389 handcrafted by the South Korean artist Rahee Yoon in an edition of twenty. Penfolds states that each bottle is carefully hand wrapped in tissue paper printed with one of twenty images from Troye's personal camera roll, making every piece a collectible keepsake. The release is described as the start of a multi-year partnership. Grange itself is a separate wine and is referenced here only as the barrel and historical link Penfolds itself draws.

Signature pairings

Thai grilled pork neck with jaew dipping sauce (คอหมูย่างน้ำจิ้มแจ่ว) — Charred fatty pork and the tamarind-and-toasted-rice tang of jaew suit the wine's dark fruit and fine tannin. Serve the jaew on the side and mild, since 14.5% alcohol and new American oak sharpen chilli heat rather than taming it.
Roast rack of lamb with herb crust — Lamb fat and the Cabernet half of the blend are a classic structural match, while the herb crust plays to the savoury finish Penfolds describes on the 2023.
Aged cheddar with walnuts — A firm aged cheddar has the salt and protein to meet Cabernet tannin, and walnut echoes the toasty character contributed by 33% new American oak hogsheads.
