Elio Altare Barolo
฿3,800
Elio Altare is a legendary figure in Piedmont, widely regarded as the architect of the modern Barolo movement. In the late 1970s, after a revelatory trip to Burgundy, Elio returned to his family’s estate in La Morra determined to revolutionize their traditional methods. This vision led to a historic confrontation with his father, culminating in Elio famously using a chainsaw to destroy the old, oversized wooden tanks to make room for French barriques. Despite being disinherited, he eventually bought back the winery from his siblings and led the Barolo Boys in introducing shorter fermentations and lower yields. Today, the estate remains family-managed by his daughter Silvia, continuing a legacy that transitioned Barolo from a often flawed, rustic wine into a global symbol of elegance and precision.
The winemaking philosophy at Elio Altare is centered on purity and a deep respect for the terroir of La Morra. The vineyards are cultivated without chemicals or pesticides, using only organic fertilizers and indigenous yeasts during fermentation. Elio's approach focuses on "modern classic" styling, where techniques like rotary fermenters and the use of French oak are employed to produce wines with silky, approachable tannins that still possess immense aging potential. The Barolo is a masterful blend from several premium vineyard sites, expressing a complex aromatic profile of ripe red fruits, wild roses, and licorice. By prioritizing the health of the land and the integrity of the fruit, the Altare family continues to produce wines that are celebrated for their concentration, depth, and remarkable finesse.
