−19%Founded in 1870 and now stewarded by brothers Marcello and Massimiliano Apollonio — the fourth generation — this Impresa Storica d'Italia-designated house has aged approximately one million litres per year in oak as a deliberate house doctrine, at a time when most Puglian peers pivoted to stainless steel for fresher, earlier-drinking styles. Terragnolo is the estate's Primitivo expression, grown on the flat to gently karst-depressed terrain around Monteroni di Lecce at roughly 100 m elevation, where calcareous soils laced with clay concentrate sugars and phenolics while dual sea breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian coasts temper the intense Mediterranean sun and provide natural disease resistance. Harvest is manual, typically in the third decade of September, followed by destemming and temperature-controlled fermentation at 27–28 °C in large Slavonian oak vats with floating cap and pump-overs; skin maceration drives polyphenolic extraction before the wine moves to French oak barriques for structured maturation. What sets Terragnolo apart within the Apollonio range is its varietal focus: Primitivo — genetically identical to Zinfandel yet expressing a distinctly Salentine character of dried fig, carob, and iron-tinged earth that Negroamaro-dominant blends cannot replicate. The current vintage delivers a dense, sun-saturated profile that rewards 2–5 years of cellaring but is already accessible alongside robust food.
