Volcanique Pinot Noir
฿฿
Jay Somers founded J. Christopher in 1996 with a singular focus: translate Willamette Valley's volcanic Jory soils into Burgundian-framed Pinot Noir without sacrificing Oregon's own identity. The Volcanique bottling names its terroir explicitly — Jory soil, a deep iron-rich volcanic clay loam derived from ancient basalt flows, drains freely yet retains just enough moisture to stress vines into concentrated, small-berried fruit. Elevations across the sourced sites typically range from 200–300 metres, with the Chehalem Mountains and Eola-Amity Hills providing cool Pacific-influenced growing conditions that preserve natural acidity. Fermentation employs native yeasts, consistent with Somers' low-intervention philosophy, and the wine is aged in French oak barrique with a restrained proportion of new wood to keep the volcanic mineral character forward rather than masked by toast. What sets Volcanique apart within the J. Christopher lineup is its deliberate role as a terroir-concept wine — the name is not decorative but a direct argument that Jory basalt leaves a fingerprint of iron-edged earthiness and taut red fruit that no other Oregon soil type replicates. Drink now through 4–6 years from vintage for peak primary fruit alongside emerging savory complexity.
