Sfurzat Di Valtelina DOC
฿฿
Sfurzat is Valtellina's indigenous expression of Nebbiolo, grown on the region's vertiginous left-bank slopes above the Adda River in Lombardy. Rainoldi sources fruit from these granite and schist-dominated hillsides at 400–700 meters elevation, where cool Alpine nights and reflected heat from the valley floor create the tension that defines the style.
The wine undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by 12–18 months in neutral oak and large cask, preserving the varietal's mineral spine rather than imposing wood character. This restraint is deliberate: Sfurzat demands time to resolve its structural intensity. The name itself derives from the Lombard dialect word for "forced" or "squeezed"—a reference to the labor-intensive harvest on near-vertical terrain.
Rainoldi's expression is bottled without fining or filtration, allowing natural sediment to develop over years. Expect a wine that demands decanting in youth and rewards cellaring through the next decade, as tannins integrate and secondary aromatics emerge.
