Tuscany IGT (Baby Brunello)
฿฿
La Gerla's Birba occupies a deliberate position in Montalcino's hierarchy: a Sangiovese Grosso expression released before the mandatory five-year Brunello aging window. The estate farms clay-limestone soils at 450–550 meters elevation on Montalcino's eastern slopes, where morning fog and afternoon thermal amplitude shape the vintage's acidity and phenolic ripeness.
The wine undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by 12 months in neutral French oak—a deliberate choice that preserves primary fruit character rather than imposing wood influence. This technique mirrors the Brunello production protocol but compresses the aging timeline, releasing the wine at 3–4 years from vintage rather than the regulated 5.
Birba translates colloquially to "rascal"—a nod to the wine's transgression against Montalcino's aging orthodoxy. The result is a wine that captures the site's mineral spine and tannin structure while remaining approachable in youth, a bridge between Rosso di Montalcino and the full Brunello expression.
Drink 2024–2032.
