Ironstone Old Bush Vine Grenache
฿฿
Pirramimma's Ironstone Old Bush Vine Grenache originates from ungrafted vines planted decades ago across McLaren Vale's distinctive ironstone plateau—a geological signature that defines the region's mineral spine. The vineyard's red-brown iron oxide-rich soils, combined with the cool maritime influence from Gulf St. Vincent, produce Grenache of unusual structural tension for the variety.
Fermentation occurs without commercial yeast inoculation, relying on ambient microflora native to the vineyard. The wine ages in neutral oak and concrete, preserving primary aromatics while allowing textural development. This restraint—avoiding new oak extraction—is deliberate: the winemaking prioritizes the terroir signal over oak imprint, a philosophy increasingly rare in McLaren Vale's fruit-forward commercial landscape.
The old-vine designation carries weight here: these ungrafted plants, survivors of phylloxera pressure, produce lower yields and concentrated phenolic ripeness without the overextraction that plagues younger plantings in warmer vintages. Drinking window: 2–8 years from vintage.
