When Baron James Mayer de Rothschild purchased this estate at auction in 1868 for 4.4 million francs, the sale included a 4.5-hectare Cabernet Sauvignon plot in Saint-Estèphe — legally absorbed into the Pauillac Grand Vin under a dérogation held to this day, a regulatory anomaly no other First Growth possesses. That plot, lieu-dit 'Blanquet', contributes to a blend that in 2019 sits close to the house norm of ~90% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and trace Petit Verdot completing the assemblage. The vineyard's defining geology is deep fine gravel — up to 10 metres in select parcels — over tertiary limestone, with aeolian black sand threading through quaternary alluvial deposits; this extreme drainage forces vine roots deep, concentrating mineral tension and suppressing excess vigour. Grapes are hand-harvested and double-sorted — first in the vineyard, then optically at the winery — before a ~5-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, alcoholic fermentation across 66 parcel-specific vats (oak, stainless, concrete) at 28–30°C, and a total maceration of ~20–22 days. Malolactic fermentation proceeds naturally in stainless-steel foudres; the Grand Vin selection is finalised the following March. Aging runs 18–20 months in 100% new French oak barriques built at La Tonnellerie des Domaines — Lafite's own on-estate cooperage, giving the house singular control over the cedar and graphite character that defines its aromatic signature. The 2019 vintage in Pauillac delivered outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon with excellent freshness and structural precision; drinking window extends well into the 2040s.
