Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2023
฿1,880
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and now stewarded by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family, is defined by a singular house discipline: the portfolio stays almost entirely within Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — making this Gamay-based Beaujolais Nouveau one of the rare transgressions from that rule, and a deliberate seasonal release rather than a core commitment. Winemaker Véronique Boss-Drouhin applies the same low-intervention philosophy here that governs the Grand Cru cellar beneath Beaune's 12th-century vaulted caves. 2023 was one of the hottest years on record in Burgundy, logging 130 extra sunshine hours above the already-warm 2022, producing generous yields and charming, fruit-forward wines built for immediate pleasure. Beaujolais Villages draws from the granite and schist-influenced soils of the northern Beaujolais zone, where elevation and mineral subsoil temper the heat and preserve freshness in Gamay. As a Nouveau, vinification follows semi-carbonic maceration, preserving primary red-fruit aromatics and delivering low tannin extraction — a deliberate contrast to Drouhin's typical maceration-and-pigeage approach for Burgundy reds. The result is a wine that carries the Drouhin house fingerprint of finesse and precision into a format designed to be opened within weeks of harvest. Drink now through early 2025.
