When Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi formalized their joint venture in 1980, they made a deliberate decision that still defines this wine: pick earlier than any Napa peer, target Bordeaux Left Bank structure, and never compromise on 100% new French oak — a commitment that runs counter to the valley's riper, more exuberant mainstream. The 2018 vintage produced double the volume of the fire-affected 2017, yet the estate maintained deep fruit concentration, a testament to the discipline of early-morning hand-harvesting and parcel-by-parcel vinification across four Oakville bench blocks.

The anchor site is the historic To Kalon Q Block, 35 acres on an alluvial fan washed down from the Mayacamas Mountains. Gravelly clay loam over alluvial and volcanic subsoil, moderated by cool afternoon air drawn from San Pablo Bay, delivers the pronounced diurnal shift that locks in acidity — the structural backbone that separates Opus One from warmer-floor Napa peers.

Each parcel ferments separately in one of approximately 50 dedicated stainless-steel tanks, with native yeasts isolated from each vineyard site. The slope-built winery moves every litre by gravity alone — no pumps at any stage. After blending, the wine ages 18–20 months in 100% new French oak in the semi-circular underground Grand Chai, then receives an additional 18 months of bottle age before release — roughly three years from harvest to market. Fining is by fresh egg whites; filtration status is undisclosed.

The 2018's higher yields did not dilute character: expect dark fruit density framed by graphite and cedar, with the fine-grained tannin architecture that defines this address. Drink 2026–2042+.
