Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2021
฿1,880
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and now stewarded by the fourth generation of the Drouhin family, applies the same house philosophy of finesse over extraction to its Beaujolais Nouveau that it brings to its Grand Cru Burgundies — a deliberate choice that sets this cuvée apart from the category's tendency toward confected, high-volume fruit. 2021 was a frost- and mildew-pressured vintage across Burgundy, producing small yields that demanded strict sorting; where fruit was healthy, the result was wines of notable freshness and precision rather than the generous, easy weight of warmer years. Beaujolais Villages Nouveau draws from the granite and schist-dominant soils of the Villages zone north of Villefranche-sur-Saône, where shallow topsoils over decomposed granite restrict vine vigour and concentrate aromatics. Vinification follows carbonic maceration, the defining technique of Beaujolais Nouveau, preserving primary fruit character and producing the cuvée's characteristic low-tannin, high-freshness profile; fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts consistent with Drouhin's estate-wide commitment to natural fermentation. Bottled at natural ABV with minimal intervention, in keeping with the house's low-intervention finishing philosophy. What distinguishes this expression is Drouhin's singular focus on terroir transparency even at the Nouveau level — a house that restricts its Beaujolais to Gamay alone and refuses to chase the category's most commercial register. Drink now through early 2023 for peak primary fruit character.
