Domaine Du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf Du Pape Rouge
฿฿฿
Story: Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe takes its name from the optical telegraph station that once crowned its vineyard parcel—a 19th-century communication relay now silent, but the land itself speaks through wine. The domaine has farmed this single 60-hectare holding on the left bank of the Rhône since 1898, building reputation on consistency rather than flash.
Site & Terroir: The vineyard sits on the elevated plateau north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape village, at approximately 100–120 meters elevation. Soils are predominantly large rounded stones (galets roulés) over clay and limestone—the signature geology of the appellation's best parcels. The plateau aspect provides cooler nights and slower ripening, preserving freshness in a warm region.
Technique: The blend centers on Grenache (typically 65–70%), with Syrah and Mourvèdre in supporting roles. Fruit is destemmed and fermented in concrete vats to preserve aromatic clarity, then aged 12–14 months in a mix of concrete and neutral oak (no new wood)—a deliberate choice that allows the terroir to dominate over oak influence. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in tank.
Special Feature: This is a wine built for the cellar. Unlike many modern Châteauneufs that prioritize immediate fruit expression, Vieux Télégraphe's restraint and mineral spine reflect the old-school Rhône philosophy: structure first, fruit second. The concrete aging imparts a subtle salinity that anchors the blend.
Drinking Window: Current releases are approachable now but will develop complexity over 10–15 years in proper storage.
