The Barossa floor's low-vigour soils stress the vine naturally, compressing berry size and intensifying pigment and tannin without irrigation intervention. The blend centres on Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre), a Southern Rhône-adjacent pairing that Penfolds has long championed in the Barossa, and the wine is matured in seasoned American oak hogsheads — the same vessel format used for Grange, here in previously-used form, which moderates oak extraction while preserving the house's characteristic mid-palate richness. What distinguishes Bin 2 within its tier is precisely this oak lineage: barrels that have already carried a senior wine impart structural memory without dominating the fruit.
