Joseph Drouhin Morgon
฿1,100
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and now stewarded by four siblings of the fourth generation, built its reputation on a singular conviction: terroir transparency over extraction. That philosophy, honed across Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, is applied here to Morgon — one of Beaujolais' ten crus — where decomposed granite and schist soils on the slopes of Mont du Py produce Gamay of unusual depth and structural grip, distinct from the lighter sandy soils of neighbouring crus. The volcanic subsoil drives the appellation's characteristic iron-tinged, almost Burgundian density. Drouhin's approach mirrors its Côte d'Or reds: fermentation in small open vats with indigenous yeasts, pigeage and pumping-over during maceration, and élevage in French high-forest oak barrels with restrained new oak — a regime that preserves fruit clarity without imposing wood. What sets this bottling apart is the producer's choice to apply a Grand Cru Burgundy winemaking framework — native yeast fermentation, tasting-led élevage decisions — to a cru Beaujolais priced at village level. The current vintage delivers the generous, charming fruit character Morgon produces in warm years, with the granite-driven structure that rewards 2–4 years of cellaring.
