Pian delle Vigne By Antinori Rosso Di Montalcino DOC
฿฿
Antinori acquired the Pian delle Vigne estate in 1995, a deliberate southward push to Sant'Angelo in Colle — one of Montalcino's warmest, most sun-exposed communes — specifically to harness the fuller ripeness that the zone's galestro and clay soils at roughly 300–350 metres deliver to Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello clone). That southern aspect accelerates phenolic maturity while the altitude preserves the acidity that keeps the wine from going flat.
Rosso di Montalcino DOC regulations allow Antinori to release this wine younger than its Brunello sibling, but the winemaking is not a shortcut: fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel is followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks (botti grandi), preserving fruit clarity while adding structural grip without heavy extraction. The result is a wine that carries genuine Montalcino architecture — firm tannin, bright Sangiovese acidity — without the decade-long wait.
What separates this from generic Rosso is the single-estate provenance: every grape originates from Pian delle Vigne's own 65 hectares, giving it a site coherence rare at this price point in the DOC. Drink now through 2028 for primary red-fruit tension, or cellar briefly for the tannins to knit.
