Nipozzano Mormoreto Toscana IGT
฿฿฿
The Nipozzano vineyard, owned by the Frescobaldi family since 1864, sits on the rolling hills between Greve and Panzano in the heart of Chianti Classico. The estate's clay-limestone soils and 300–400 metre elevation create the cool-night conditions essential to balancing Tuscan ripeness with structural acidity.
Mormoreto breaks Chianti's Sangiovese mandate: this is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend (with small Cabernet Franc), vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel before 18 months in French oak (30% new). The wine spends a further 12 months in bottle before release, allowing the oak tannins to integrate with the fruit structure.
The transgression—a non-traditional blend in a Classico zone—reflects Frescobaldi's 1980s commitment to Bordeaux varieties on Tuscan terroir. Mormoreto has become a benchmark for how Cabernet and Merlot can express Chianti's mineral backbone without sacrificing the region's sun-soaked generosity.
Current releases show 12–15 years of cellaring potential; the wine reaches full integration around year 5–7 from vintage.
