This single hogshead was filled in 1987 and laid down in one of Glenfiddich's stone-walled dunnage warehouses with earthen floors at Dufftown, Moray — a stable, cool environment at the base of the Conval Hills where the valley's own microclimate slows extraction and preserves aromatic delicacy across decades. The sole water source throughout production is the Robbie Dhu Spring, a mineral-rich highland spring whose catchment the Grant family protected by acquiring over 1,000 acres of surrounding land. Maturation in a single American white oak hogshead — a format smaller than a butt, larger than a barrel — concentrates wood contact and accelerates the conversion of oak lactones into coconut and vanilla compounds while the Speyside air slowly concentrates the spirit. At 36 years, this sits far beyond Glenfiddich's standard age-statement ceiling, making it an ultra-rare single-cask departure from a distillery whose core range tops out at 50 years only in exceptional archive releases. No marrying vat, no blending of casks: what is in the bottle is the unmediated record of one cask and one Speyside winter after another across four decades.
