John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000 with a winemaker's instinct applied to Scotch — sourcing, selecting, and re-maturing casks rather than distilling, a deliberate structural transgression in an industry that prizes distillery provenance above all else. Crimson Cask extends that philosophy into red-wine-cask finishing, layering ex-red-wine wood influence over a blended malt foundation sourced from distilleries across Scotland's malt-producing regions. The result sits within Compass Box's signature framework: bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, and free of added colouring — parameters that preserve the textural density and natural hue that chill-filtration and E150a would otherwise flatten or falsify. As a blending house operating without its own still, Compass Box commissions bespoke casks with specified toast levels and holds maturing stocks in bonded Scottish warehouses, giving it a degree of cask-level control unusual for a non-distillery producer. The special feature here is the red-wine cask itself: within a category dominated by ex-bourbon and ex-sherry maturation, the use of wine-seasoned wood introduces anthocyanin-derived colour and a fruit-skin tannic grip that neither bourbon nor Oloroso delivers. Non-vintage by design, the blend is recipe-driven for consistency across batches rather than declared by year.
