When Harold Currie, former Managing Director of Chivas Brothers, revived legal distillation on Arran in 1995 after a 160-year island silence, he made a deliberate break from island convention: no peat, no caramel colouring, no chill filtration — a philosophy that reaches its fullest expression in the 21 Year Old. Lochranza Distillery sits in Glen Eason Biorach ('Valley of the Sharp Waterfalls') on the granite-dominant northern half of the island, bisected by the Highland Boundary Fault. Water drawn from Loch na Davie descends through six waterfalls and granite bedrock, arriving at the mash tun soft, mineral-clean, and free of the heavy peat influence that defines most island malts. That geological purity shapes every stage of production. Fermentation runs 60–75 hours in Oregon pine washbacks — longer than industry standard — to maximise fruity ester development before double distillation through tall-necked, long-lyne-arm copper pot stills with shell-and-tube condensers, collecting new make at ~68% ABV. Two-plus decades of maturation in primarily ex-bourbon American oak and ex-sherry European oak casks, held in on-site dunnage and racked warehouses under Gulf Stream-moderated maritime air, builds the layered depth the younger expressions cannot reach. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, with no E150a colouring added — the full 21-year texture is preserved intact. The special feature: this is the longest standard age statement from an island distillery that categorically refuses peat, making it a structural outlier in the Islands category.
