−4%When Masataka Taketsuru founded Nikka in 1934, Japanese regulations barring distillate exchange between competing groups forced a singular solution: build two distilleries with opposing flavour profiles and blend entirely in-house. Nikka Tailored is the direct expression of that architecture. Yoichi, on Hokkaido's northwest coast at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula, draws snowmelt from the Yoichi River through a cool, sea-misted maritime microclimate historically rich in local peat and coal — conditions Taketsuru chose to replicate Scottish Highland terroir. Its malt is distilled in straight-head pot stills with downward lyne arms over direct coal fire, a method retained from Longmorn, Scotland, that preserves heavier congeners and amplifies coastal, smoky complexity. Miyagikyo's contribution arrives via Coffey continuous stills — originally built by Blairs Ltd. in Glasgow — using a corn-dominant grain bill that delivers sweetness and a creamy mid-palate. The two components are married at Nikka's Tochigi facility before bottling. What sets this apart within the blended whisky category is the structural impossibility of replication: no outside distillate enters the blend, and Yoichi remains one of the last distilleries globally still operating direct coal-fired pot stills — labour-intensive, difficult to control, and categorically irreplaceable.
