When William Grant hand-built his Dufftown distillery in 1886 using second-hand equipment, he secured the Robbie Dhu Spring in the Conval Hills as his sole water source — a decision so foundational that the Grant family purchased the surrounding highland catchment specifically to protect it. That same spring water reduces every bottle of the 18 Year Old to bottling strength today. The distillery sits at the base of the Conval Hills in the Glen of the River Fiddich, where stone-walled dunnage warehouses with earthen floors hold up to 800,000 casks in conditions of exceptional thermal stability. The 18 Year Old incorporates an 18–20% ex-Oloroso sherry European oak component — the highest sherry fraction in Glenfiddich's standard age-statement range — layered over a predominantly ex-bourbon American white oak base across a minimum 18 years. All constituent casks then undergo a mandatory marrying step in large oak tuns before bottling, a house-wide integration protocol that distinguishes Glenfiddich from distilleries bottling direct from individual casks. The result is the point where the distillery's signature swan-neck still character — light, orchard-driven new make from small 4,500 L spirit stills — meets genuine dried-fruit density without the house style being overwhelmed by wood. Bottled at 40% ABV, chill-filtered, and reduced with Robbie Dhu spring water, entirely on-site at Dufftown — one of very few Speyside operations to distil, mature, and bottle under one roof.
