Royal Salute was born on 2 June 1953, created by Chivas Brothers to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II — a commission that locked in a non-negotiable floor of 21 years' maturation on every component, grain and malt alike, a standard the brand has never relaxed across seven decades. That commitment is what separates this Chinese New Year Limited Edition from the broader luxury blended Scotch category: most prestige blends guarantee only the youngest cask, not every cask.

The malt backbone originates at Strathisla Distillery, Keith, Moray — founded 1786, the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands — where process water is drawn from the Fons Bulliens Well, a peat-free spring prized for its softness. The Isla River valley's mild, humid Speyside microclimate slows evaporation and encourages the gradual extraction of fruit and vanilla compounds over the mandatory two-decade-plus rest.

Maturation combines ex-bourbon American oak and ex-sherry casks, held in dunnage and racked warehouses including the dedicated Royal Salute Vault within Strathisla, where casks are reserved exclusively for this portfolio. Double distillation through Strathisla's short, squat 12,500-litre wash stills and 8,500-litre spirit stills produces a heavier, waxy new-make that absorbs oak influence across the full 21-year minimum. Bottled at 40% ABV, the Signature Blend marries Strathisla single malt with multi-region grain and malt components, all 21+ years old.

The special edition arrives in a hand-crafted porcelain flagon — produced from Cornish clay with double-layer glazing over up to six days — making it the only luxury blended Scotch where the vessel itself carries a heritage craft credential alongside the liquid.

As a non-vintage blend, character is consistent across releases: ripe pear, dried citrus, vanilla, and warm baking spice, with the long finish that extended oak contact on every component delivers. Approachable now; the ceramic seal supports extended cellaring.
