Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare Glenury Royal (750 ml)

Glenury Royal distillery, established on the northeast Highland coast near Stonehaven, was permanently closed and demolished — its whisky surviving only in a dwindling reserve of casks. The Ghost & Rare series is one of the only commercially available vehicles through which that liquid reaches a glass, making this release as much an act of preservation as blending.

The Highland provenance of Glenury Royal's surviving casks brings a coastal, heathery character that no active distillery can replicate; its northeast coastal position — cold, maritime, and exposed — produced a spirit with pronounced waxy texture and dried-fruit depth during maturation. These 'ghost' casks are blended alongside the standard Blue Label architecture: Clynelish's coastal wax, Caol Ila's clean maritime peat, and Cardhu's honeyed Speyside sweetness.

Selection criteria for Blue Label require that only 1 in 10,000 casks across Diageo's reserve of approximately 10 million qualify; the Ghost & Rare tier imposes a further constraint — the ghost component is finite and irreplaceable by definition. Bottled at 40% ABV, chill-filtered, with no age statement, the blend's age profile is determined entirely by the oldest qualifying casks rather than a declared minimum. The Glenury Royal component is the special feature no living distillery can supply: once this batch is gone, that specific flavour signature is gone with it.
