−3%When Masataka Taketsuru founded Dai Nippon Kaju Co., Ltd. in 1934 at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula, he chose Yoichi specifically because its cool, fog-laden Sea of Japan microclimate and peat-rich Ishikari Plain mirrored the Scottish Highlands he had trained in — a deliberate act of terroir transplantation that no other Japanese producer attempted at the same scale.
Yoichi's snowmelt water from the Yoichi River feeds direct coal-fired pot stills with downward lyne arms — one of the last distilleries on earth to retain this labour-intensive method — which suppresses reflux and retains heavy congeners, producing a dense, maritime malt. This is married with lighter spirit from Miyagikyo's steam-heated stills and Coffey continuous still grain whisky (corn-dominant, distilled on Glasgow-built Blairs stills transferred from the Nishinomiya plant), adding a creamy, sweet counterweight.
Super Nikka is a blended whisky drawing on Nikka's proprietary full-palette system — the only major Japanese producer legally compelled to build opposing flavour profiles in-house, since Japanese regulations prohibit inter-group distillate exchange. The result is a blend with structural range that most Japanese houses cannot replicate without external sourcing.
As a NV expression, Super Nikka is built for consistency across releases; no vintage character data is applicable, and the drinking window is open now.
