Buffalo Trace Distillery sits on the banks of the Kentucky River in Frankfort — a site where bison crossed and traders followed, with distilling records dating to 1773. That continuity is not incidental: the distillery survived Prohibition by operating under a medicinal whiskey license, preserving its yeast strains and production culture intact.

The mash bill is a low-rye recipe built on corn, rye, and malted barley, fermented with a proprietary yeast strain and distilled to no more than 125 proof before entry into new, charred American white oak barrels — the legal requirement for straight bourbon, but Buffalo Trace treats char level and warehouse placement as deliberate flavor levers. Barrels age across multi-story rick houses where Kentucky's dramatic seasonal temperature swings drive deep penetration of spirit into wood.

Bottled at 45% ABV (90 proof), non-chill-filtered character is preserved at this entry-level expression.
