John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000 with a deliberate provocation: treat Scotch blending the way a winemaker treats assemblage — sourcing specific parcels, specifying custom cask parameters, and publishing the architecture. Oakcross is the house's most direct expression of that oak-first philosophy, built around custom-made casks fitted with heavily toasted French oak heads — the same technique that drew a formal ban from the Scotch Whisky Association in 2006 when applied to inner staves in The Spice Tree. Here, Compass Box works within the letter of the regulations while preserving the spirit of the experiment: French oak's characteristic vanillin, clove, and dried-fruit extraction layered over Highland malt character sourced from distilleries including Clynelish and Linkwood. Component whiskies arrive from ex-bourbon hogsheads at source distilleries, then undergo additional maturation in Compass Box's bespoke French-oak-headed casks held in bonded warehouses in Scotland. The blend is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, with no added colouring — decisions that preserve the textural weight the French oak imparts. What separates Oakcross from peers is the precision of the oak intervention: not a finishing cask added at the end, but a specified toast level commissioned from the cooperage and integrated into the maturation plan from the outset.
