When Alko launched Finlandia in 1970, the base spirit was already built on an unusual conviction: purity through distillation architecture, not charcoal filtration. That same philosophy underpins every expression, including this grapefruit variant. Distillation takes place at Koskenkorva, Ilmajoki — western Finland's grain belt, where six-row barley grows under up to 72 days of unbroken Midnight Sun, producing high-starch grain with a clean fermentation profile. The spirit is driven through seven stainless-steel column stills (three under vacuum, three atmospheric, one pressurised) across more than 200 individual distillation steps over approximately 50 hours, exiting at 96.5% ABV — a level of rectification that strips fusel alcohols and methanol without any charcoal contact. The distillate then travels 315 km by rail to Rajamäki, where it is diluted with completely untreated glacial spring water mechanically filtered through 10,000-year-old Ice Age moraine — no deionisation, no reverse osmosis, no mineral removal. The grapefruit character is layered onto this exceptionally neutral, light-bodied base, making the citrus expression unusually transparent and clean rather than syrupy. No additives beyond the natural flavouring; no charcoal filtration at any stage. A ready-to-mix expression best consumed young and cold.
