Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao (700 ml)
฿1,759
When Alexandre Gabriel co-developed the 1840 Original Formula cognac with historian David Wondrich, the same archival obsession extended to liqueur: Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao reconstructs the style of orange liqueur that 19th-century bartenders actually used — drier, more bitter, and cognac-forward rather than the sugar-heavy triple secs that displaced it. The base spirit is Grande Champagne cognac from Logis d'Angeac, where marine fossil limestone soils in the Angeac-Champagne commune drive sharp natural acidity into the eaux-de-vie — a structural backbone that prevents the orange from reading as confected. The recipe layers dried bitter orange peel (Curaçao laraha), sweet orange peel, and spice over the cognac base, bottled at 40% ABV — meaningfully higher proof than most commercial triple secs, preserving aromatic intensity through dilution in cocktails. Sweetness is deliberately restrained, landing closer to a dry Curaçao in the historical sense than to modern fruit liqueur conventions. What separates this from every other orange liqueur in the category is the provenance of the base spirit: Grande Champagne cognac, not neutral grain alcohol, means the chalky-mineral terroir of Charente is an active ingredient, not a background note. Drink neat over ice or as the orange component in any classic cocktail calling for triple sec or Curaçao.
