Founded in 1863 by Jean-Baptiste Camus and still independently held by the fifth generation, the house made a deliberate geographic bet by establishing a separate aging cellar directly on Île de Ré — the most westerly point of the Cognac AOC, classified under the Bois à Terroirs cru — to capture the Atlantic's salt-laden humidity and accelerated oxidative exchange that a landlocked Charente cellar simply cannot replicate.

The island's coastal microclimate, with its higher ambient salinity and oceanic temperature swings, works on the spirit through the barrel stave in ways that amplify saline, iodic, and dried-citrus registers absent from the house's Borderies estate expressions. The underlying eau-de-vie is distilled sur lies in traditional copper Charentais alembic pot stills, with Camus's patented 'Instensity' method applied during the second distillation: twenty one-litre samples of the heads fraction are drawn, the single litre of highest ester concentration is identified and reintegrated into the hearts, producing a structurally more aromatic spirit before wood contact begins. Aging proceeds in previously used, lightly toasted French Limousin oak casks (350 L), preserving the maritime-inflected aromatics rather than overlaying them with new-oak vanilla. The Île de Ré range is the only commercially available Cognac expression aged exclusively in a coastal island cellar within the AOC's westernmost cru, making the maritime terroir — not the grape or the oak — the primary differentiating variable. As a non-vintage blend, drinking window is immediate; serve at 18–20°C to open the saline-floral register fully.
