In 1765, Irish officer Richard Hennessy settled on the banks of the Charente River in Cognac and began assembling eaux-de-vie from the region's top four crus — a sourcing philosophy that has never changed. The Pantone Limited Edition wraps that same VS liquid in a colorist's collaboration, but the spirit inside is unchanged: a multi-cru blend drawn from Grande Champagne's shallow clay-limestone chalk, Petite Champagne, Borderies clay-flint, and Fins Bois, each cru contributing a distinct textural register. What separates Hennessy's production from most Cognac houses is the deliberate choice to distill both with and without lees, then reintroduce heads and tails into the brouillis before the second pass in traditional Charentais copper pot stills — a technique that concentrates congeners and pushes the spirit toward dark fruit, oak spice, and structural depth rather than the lighter floral profiles of lees-free distillation. VS is matured in new Limousin oak barrels hand-crafted at Hennessy's own cooperage from trees felled at 80+ years, then bottled at 40% ABV after light filtration. The minimum two-year age requirement for VS is the floor, not the ceiling — the Tasting Committee reviews ~10,000 eaux-de-vie annually to build the blend. The Pantone edition is the entry point to the only cognac house whose Master Blender lineage — the Fillioux family — spans eight unbroken generations.
