Klein Constantia Riesling
฿1,200
Dating back to 1685, Klein Constantia is one of South Africa’s most historic wine estates, originally part of the vast Constantia property granted to Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the Cape. Over the centuries, its wines became legendary, prized by historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Jane Austen. Following a renaissance in the 1980s, the estate reclaimed its position as a global benchmark for quality. Located on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, the vineyards benefit from a unique maritime terroir characterized by decomposed granite soils and cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. These conditions facilitate a slow ripening process, essential for preserving the vibrant acidity and aromatic precision that define the estate's cool-climate white wines.
The winemaking philosophy at Klein Constantia is rooted in a deep respect for heritage combined with modern precision and sustainable farming. As a WWF Conservation Champion, the estate utilizes organic and biodynamic practices to foster biodiversity and ensure the most natural representation of each season. For the Riesling, the focus is on capturing the purity of the fruit and the mineral-driven tension provided by the granite slopes. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in the cool early morning to maintain freshness. This minimal-intervention approach in the cellar allows the site’s distinct terroir to shine, resulting in an elegant wine that balances concentrated stone fruit flavors with a crisp, long-lasting finish.
