Riesling “Incline” Feinherb
฿
Johannes Selbach, whose family has farmed the Mosel since 1661, coined the Incline label as a literal nod to the vertiginous slate slopes that define the middle Mosel — gradients that force hand-harvesting and concentrate every vine's energy into small, intensely flavored berries. The feinherb designation sits between halbtrocken and fully off-dry: residual sugar is present but disciplined, kept in tension by the region's characteristically high natural acidity rather than masked by sweetness. Mosel Riesling's signature comes from Devonian blue and grey slate soils that absorb daytime heat and radiate it through cool nights, slowing ripening and preserving aromatic precision while the river's reflective surface amplifies light exposure on north-facing bends. Selbach vinifies in traditional large Fuder casks (1,000-litre Mosel oak), which impart no perceptible wood character but allow gentle micro-oxygenation, preserving the grape's primary fruit and mineral transparency. The Incline is unusual in the Selbach lineup as an entry-level blended cuvée that still draws from estate-managed slate parcels rather than purchased fruit. Drink now through 3–5 years; the feinherb structure makes it more versatile at the table than a fully sweet Spätlese.
