(Lafite) Saga R Bordeaux Blanc
฿
SaleSaga R represents Domaines Barons de Rothschild's deliberate pivot into white wine production within the Haut-Médoc appellation, a region historically defined by Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard sits on the Left Bank's characteristic gravel-over-clay plateau, with southeast-facing slopes that capture morning sun and benefit from the Gironde estuary's moderating influence.
The blend centers on Sauvignon Blanc, supplemented by Sémillon, vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve aromatic volatility. Fermentation occurs at cool temperatures to retain the primary citrus and herbaceous character; partial malolactic conversion is controlled to maintain acidity structure without full softening. The wine sees minimal oak—a deliberate choice that allows the terroir's mineral signature to dominate rather than mask it.
This expression breaks from Bordeaux's white-wine conventions (typically Graves-based, oak-aged blends). Saga R's restraint and freshness signal a modernist reading of the region's potential, positioning it as a food-driven aperitif rather than a dessert-wine precursor.
Drink 2024–2028 for optimal aromatic expression.
