Yalumba Samuel's Collection Eden Valley Roussanne
฿1,200
Yalumba planted Viognier in Eden Valley in 1980 when the variety was virtually unknown outside France — that same pioneering instinct now extends to Roussanne, a grape even rarer in Australian hands, sourced from the same high-altitude Eden Valley sites that define the house's white wine identity. Eden Valley's shallow, rocky, well-drained soils at 400–550 m elevation impose genuine stress on the vine, concentrating flavour while preserving the natural acidity that Roussanne so easily surrenders in warmer ground. The result is a white with structural tension rather than the flabby weight the variety can produce at lower elevations. Vinification follows Yalumba's cool, controlled fermentation protocol for aromatic whites, preserving the variety's characteristic lanolin, white peach, and dried herb register without oxidative heaviness. The Samuel's Collection tier is designed as a terroir-transparent, approachable expression — 100% vegan since the 2012 vintage, in line with the house-wide commitment to animal-free production. What distinguishes this bottling within the Australian white wine landscape is the sheer rarity of the variety itself: Roussanne accounts for a fraction of a percent of Australian plantings, making Eden Valley-grown examples genuinely uncommon. Drink now through the near term for freshness, or hold briefly for the waxy, honeyed complexity Roussanne develops with short bottle age.
