Pinot Noir Te Wahi
฿฿฿
Te Wahi represents Cloudy Bay's single-vineyard expression from their flagship Marlborough site, where the Wairau Valley's cool diurnal temperature swings define the vintage rhythm. The vineyard sits on the valley floor with alluvial soils—gravel and silt deposits from glacial outwash—at moderate elevation where morning fog delays ripening and extends the growing season into autumn.
Pinot Noir from this block undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in open vats, with extended skin contact to extract color and tannin structure without over-extraction. The wine is aged in French oak (proportion and new/used ratio varies by vintage) for 12–14 months before bottling, allowing the fruit to integrate with subtle wood influence rather than dominate it.
Te Wahi distinguishes itself through mineral salinity—a hallmark of Marlborough's free-draining gravels—that cuts through dark cherry and red plum aromatics. The wine carries the region's signature herbaceous undertone, a function of cool-climate phenolic ripeness, without vegetal harshness. Drinking window: 2–8 years from vintage.
