−13%The Ponte family has worked the chalky hillsides of Frazione Gorzano, San Damiano d'Asti — a corridor between Asti and Alba where Barbera's naturally elevated acidity is amplified by calcium-rich soils — since Giuseppe Ponte established the current cellar in 1968. The third generation, led by Massimo, Ivan, and Renato Ponte (Renato a graduate of the Enologica Albese wine school), made a deliberate house decision to resist the heavy-barrique style that dominated Barbera's prestige tier in the 1990s and 2000s, betting instead on varietal transparency at accessible price points.
The Fiorellino Red is 100% Barbera, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel at 26–28°C with 10–15 days of skin maceration, then aged 6 months in stainless steel followed by 6 months in bottle before release — no oak contact whatsoever. This regime locks in Barbera's signature deep ruby colour, sharp red-cherry acidity, and low-tannin texture without the vanilla overlay that barriques would impose. What sets this expression apart within its category is precisely that absence: at a price point where many producers reach for oak chips or short-stave contact, Fratelli Ponte uses none, letting the chalky-soil minerality and grape tannin speak unmediated. Drink young, within 2–3 years of vintage, for maximum fruit clarity.
