Barbaresco D.O.C.G.
฿฿
Barbaresco represents one of Italy's most demanding terroirs: the hillside vineyards south of Alba in Piedmont, where Nebbiolo achieves its most elegant expression. The region's southeast-facing slopes, composed of calcareous marl and sandstone soils at 250–350 meters elevation, produce wines of distinctive mineral tension and fine-grained tannin structure.
Arione's Barbaresco follows the region's classical production mandate: Nebbiolo grapes fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then aged minimum 26 months in large Slavonian oak casks (the Barbaresco D.O.C.G. minimum is 9 months in wood, but traditional producers extend this significantly). This extended oak contact softens the grape's naturally austere tannins while preserving the wine's characteristic rose-petal aromatics and tar-tinged minerality.
The special feature of Barbaresco versus its northern neighbor Barolo lies in its lighter body and earlier approachability—Nebbiolo here develops silkier tannin profiles due to slightly warmer microclimate conditions, yet retains the varietal's signature structural rigor. Arione's expression balances this duality: immediate floral perfume paired with serious aging potential.
Drink 2024–2032. The wine reaches optimal balance around year 4–5 from vintage.
