Founded in 1880 and now in its fourth generation under the Drouhin family, Maison Joseph Drouhin is defined by a singular house philosophy: finesse over extraction, terroir transparency over winemaking imposition. That discipline — applied across 100 hectares of organically and biodynamically farmed Burgundy — extends even to this Beaujolais Villages Nouveau, where winemaker Véronique Boss-Drouhin applies the same low-intervention rigour to Gamay that governs the house's Grand Cru Pinot Noirs.

Beaujolais Villages draws from the granite and schist-dominant soils of the northern Beaujolais hills, where higher elevation and thinner topsoil constrain yields and sharpen acidity relative to the flatter Beaujolais AOC floor. These conditions produce Gamay with more structural tension and brighter red-fruit definition than the broader appellation. Nouveau vinification relies on semi-carbonic or whole-cluster carbonic maceration, preserving primary fruit aromatics and producing characteristically low tannin with lifted violet and fresh cherry character. The Drouhin négociant model here blends select grower parcels within the Villages appellation, with élevage decisions guided by tasting rather than fixed protocol — consistent with the house's minimal-intervention bottling philosophy.

What sets this expression apart within the Nouveau category is its provenance: a house whose portfolio otherwise excludes everything except Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, making this Gamay a deliberate, narrow exception. The 2024 vintage in Beaujolais follows a season of variable weather; expect bright, juicy fruit with lively acidity. Drink within months of release for peak primary character.
