When Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold planted Shiraz at Magill in 1844, he chose the foot of the Mount Lofty Ranges — an urban site now 15 minutes from Adelaide's CBD that remains a single-vineyard monopole, the only wine in the Penfolds portfolio to carry an unblended, unambiguous address. While Grange draws from Barossa, McLaren Vale, and beyond, Magill Estate Shiraz is the house's rare act of terroir specificity.

The site's ancient soils at the Ranges' base concentrate the vine's energy, and the 2019 season — hot and drought-stressed — delivered characteristically low yields, compressing fruit into what Chief Winemaker Peter Gago designates a 'sleeper vintage' analogous to 1989 and 1999: big, dark, and structurally compressed, requiring patience to fully open.

In the winery, fruit is processed through traditional basket press — a deliberate tactile choice that preserves tannin integrity without extraction aggression — then matured in a combination of French and American oak barrels, a departure from Grange's 100% new American hogshead regime that allows the single-vineyard character to speak rather than be shaped by wood dominance.

What no peer in the Penfolds range does: this is the only wine that collapses the house's multi-regional blending philosophy entirely, making it the closest thing Penfolds produces to a Burgundian monopole. Scored 97 pts Decanter, 98 pts Wine Spectator, 95 pts Wine Independent; drinking window 2033–2070.
