Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and now steered by the fourth generation, built its reputation on a singular conviction: terroir transparency over extraction. That philosophy — overseen by winemaker Véronique Boss-Drouhin — extends even to this Beaujolais Villages Nouveau, where house discipline shapes what is typically a rushed, commercially driven release into something more considered.

Beaujolais Villages draws from the granite and schist-dominant soils of the northern Beaujolais hills, elevated above the alluvial plains, where the combination of poor, well-drained subsoil and continental microclimate forces 100% Gamay vines to concentrate flavour rather than yield volume. Granite in particular drives the lifted, crunchy red-fruit character that separates Villages-level fruit from basic Beaujolais AOC.

Vinification follows the carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration tradition of the appellation, preserving primary fruit aromatics and producing characteristically low tannin and vivid colour. Drouhin's négociant sourcing selects grower parcels within the Villages zone, applying the same tasting-led élevage evaluation used across the broader portfolio.

What distinguishes this expression: Drouhin is a house that almost exclusively focuses on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — Gamay is the rare exception, making this Nouveau an outlier in a portfolio of Grand Cru Burgundy.
