Chateau Petrus 2012
฿221,599
Pomerol has no official classification, yet Petrus commands prices that exceed every 1855 Médoc First Growth — a status built entirely on a geological accident: a 40-million-year-old blue smectite clay boutonnière rising to 40 metres at the plateau's apex, its reduced-iron subsoil covered by 60–80 cm of dark organic topsoil across 11.4 hectares divided into 12 parcels. The clay's water-retention, moderated by the elevated position's natural drainage, produces Merlot of extraordinary concentration without irrigation stress.
Vinification is deliberately minimal: hand-harvest over 2–3 afternoons only (morning dew excluded to prevent dilution), 100% destemming, optical sorting, and fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats on native yeasts with gentle extraction — no saignée. Malolactic fermentation proceeds naturally; the blend is finalised in December. Aging runs 18–20 months in French oak, approximately 50% new, with barrels steamed before use. Bottled unfiltered; no second wine exists — declassified fruit is sold as generic Pomerol.
The 2012 vintage in Pomerol delivered a cooler, more structured profile than the opulent 2009–2010 pair, producing a wine of tighter architecture and slower evolution — a drinking window extending comfortably to 2040 and beyond. No critic scores are listed in the brand library for this vintage.
