Fattoria Aldobrandesca By Antinori Vie Cave, Malbec IGT
฿฿
Fattoria Aldobrandesca, Antinori's Val d'Orcia property, sits on the rolling clay-limestone hills south of Montepulciano at 300–400 meters elevation, where cool nights moderate the Tuscan summer heat. The Vie Cave bottling sources from vineyard blocks facing southeast, capturing morning sun while benefiting from afternoon shade cast by the region's characteristic eroded ravines (the "vie cave" themselves).
This Malbec IGT represents a deliberate transgression: Tuscany's traditional Sangiovese territory replanted with the Argentine varietal. Fruit undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, then 12 months in French oak (30% new), building structure without masking the wine's mineral core. The clay-rich soils impart a savory, iron-tinged undertone characteristic of the Val d'Orcia microclimate.
The special feature lies in the varietal choice itself—Malbec's natural tannin density and dark-fruit profile find unexpected harmony in Tuscan limestone, creating a wine that reads neither purely Argentine nor classically Tuscan, but rather a deliberate bridge between terroirs.
